The Washington Wine Academy (WWA) was founded by Jim Barker in 1999 as a 501c3 Virginia non-profit organization for the furtherance of wine education for the Washington, DC (Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia).
At this moment, we are taking a break from offering classes while our Founder is dealing with some personal and private matters. Stay tuned for more information and thank you for all of your support over the last 17 years.
Our usual offerings of casual classes such as our “1-Hour” Series where you will learn about wine basics, regionally focused such as (France, Italy, Germany or Virginia) is the perfect starting point for anyone looking to take a class with us. We also offer longer classes from 90 minutes to two hours that might focus on a particular variety of grape (Pinot Noir, etc) or quite often have actual winemakers from around the world come share their passion for the grape and taste their own wines.
Furthermore, we have evolved into offering quite a selection of beer and spirits courses as well. Our most popular is our Beer Ingredients class which is a three part course focused on the key components of beer: Barley, Hops and Yeast!
We also offer many different off-site unique and fun wine and beer events. Our biggest event is our 1K Wine and Beer Walk that takes place in the Shops at Crystal City, a Vornado property featuring over 150 shops within the buildings of Crystal Drive in Arlington, VA. This indoor event takes place in November and March and is a great way to taste your way through the mall, sampling wine or beer, food and enjoying music and fun.
Other events include: Wine in the Waterpark on Crystal Drive – every Friday night in June and September where you can listen to live music and enjoy what Crystal City has to offer with a nice glass or wine or beer. As well as Blues and Brews on Crystal Drive every Wednesday in June and September (live music, wine and beer) and our newest addition in Rosslyn…Throwback Thursdays taking place every Thursday in June and September with 80’s and 90’s cover bands, wine and beer. And, don’t miss our Vintage Crystal Pups & Pilsners, our outdoor craft beer festival that is dog friendly! Grab your dog and come on over…if you don’t have one…local animal rescue organizations will be on hand to help you adopt one of your very own!
The wine industry can generate a lot of waste, and the Washington Wine Academy is dedicated to changing that standard. We are an environmentally-friendly and responsible organization.
We’re really proud to do our part, and so we:
